It was officially established in 1775, though the site dates back to 1717 when there was numerous illicit stills in Glenturret. It was closed in the mid 1920s and then resurrected in the late 1950s by Peter Fairlie who repositioned The Macallan brand globally. The distillery is focused on the blended whisky Famous Grouse of which it has a visitors centre named The Famous
